Jewellery Care & Storage
Treat your pieces with love!
Here are some steps to take proper care of your gold-plated jewellery, to extend its life and keep it bright and beautiful:
To Prevent Tarnishing:
- Your jewellery is particularly susceptible to damage from the effects of chemicals present in perfume, hairspray, make-up, nail polish remover, body oils, sun tan lotion and deodorant.
- Wear your gold-plated jewellery after finishing all preparation for going out.
- It should also be the first thing to take off before preparing for bed.
- It’s a good idea to wash your hands before handling gold plated jewellery.
- Never take a shower before taking off your jewellery to protect it from soap and shampoo. Also, avoid using paper towels and tissues for cleaning, since they can scratch the jewellery and speed up tarnishing.
- Try not to wear gold-plated rings while doing housework since chemicals can impact the plating.
- Don’t expose gold plated jewellery to chlorinated or salty water. This means taking off your jewelry before swimming in pools, hot tubs or the sea.
- While regular wearing sterling silver jewellery keeps it beautiful, gold-plated silver will tarnish quicker when you wear it daily.
- Do not keep jewellery in direct sunlight as prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause many gemstones to fade and lose their colour.
- Some stones can also be quite porous, which is why you shouldn’t leave these kinds of stones immersed in water for too long. Liquids and oils can seep into the gems through the tiny cracks between the crystals, causing permanent discolouration and damage.
- It is strongly recommended that you take off your cubic zirconia jewellery before you step in the shower.
- 18k gold plated stainless steel and white gold plated metals aren't prone to tarnishing, and they take gold plating well. You should still, however make sure to keep the jewellery away from any abrasive contact to preserve the coating.
To Clean Jewellery:
Keep in mind that ways of cleaning is not the same for all jewellery types.
- Cleaning your gold-plated jewellery regularly is important to prolong its life.
- To best keep your 18K gold plated Jewellery clean, wash it with water or gentle dish soap, or a professional Jewellery cleaning solution.
- Dry it on a cloth after rinsing it thoroughly, then gently rub the surface with a jewellery cloth or a soft, non-abrasive one. Avoid using a silver cloth since it quickly removes the gold plating.
- Cleaning 18k gold plated stainless steel requires warm water, a cloth, and dish detergent. After cleaning, polish it lightly with a dry soft cloth to remove remaining water spots.
- To clean fine cubic zirconia jewellery, use 2 parts warm water and 1 part dish soap. Professional jewellery cleaning liquid can also be used.
- Wipe your jewellery after each use with a soft cloth to remove body oils and sweat accumulated on the surface throughout the day.
- Polishing – Having your jewellery made of gold, sterling silver, and brass polished is an excellent option.
- Re-plating – It is a necessary step for cleaning gold-plating silver jewellery once it tarnishes.
Storage:
- Your gold vermeil, brass plated and silver jewellery should be kept in a dark, cool and dry place.
- With time and wear, sterling silver will naturally become oxidised and eventually tarnish.
- Storing silver jewellery in an airtight bag or jewellery pouch when it is not being worn will keep out the air that causes oxidation.
- The oxidation process is also slowed down by wearing your jewellery often.
- If your jewellery is stored for long-periods of time, occasional cleaning is recommended to maintain shine and keep oxidation at bay.
- Always store your jewellery pieces individually, preferably in your soft-lined pouch so that they don’t rub together, scratch or tangle.
- Particular care should be taken with gemstones to ensure that they do not knock against one another when stored. Also remember to keep your chains fastened so they don’t become tangled.
